Cricket: a world sport
In The Netherlands cricketers from many countries are members of the cricket clubs. One can encounter, amongst others, players from The Netherlands, Surinam, England, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. To actually understand each other, both Dutch and English are being spoken. This way children automatically pick up the Dutch and English language.
The background of members are reflected in the international kitchen of clubs: the menu contains, beside the usual tosti’s, bitterballen and barbecues, also roti from Surinam, Afrikaanse braais, Indian curries and halal dishes.
Cricket is the ultimate social sport. Of course you’d like to win the match, but at the same time one wants to play sports together in a pleasant way. After the game everyone is part of the cricket community which has a great passion for the sport.
Respect
Respect forms an important issue in cricket. The umpire is always right – even if this is not the case. Players and spectators show respect towards the opposition. The crowd will cheer for good performances of players from both teams and does not jeer at each other and the opposition because….. That’s not cricket!
In between innings and after the match the teams join each other respectively at lunch or drinks. Families mix alongside the boundary to watch the game. The atmosphere around the cricket ground is always really relaxed and everyone is and feels welcome.
