Dutch international Van der Merwe in SA20 final
Published at 10 February, 2023With his team Sunrisers Eastern Cape Roelof van der Merwe has qualified for the final of the SA20 tournament in South Africa. The semi-final against the Jo'burg Super Kings (JSK) was a spectacle with a lot of runs: 213 – 196. Van der Merwe was important for his team, taking 2-23.
Van der Merwe's team put up a solid 213/5, thanks in large part to Aiden Markram who recorded a blistering 100 off only 58 balls. His performance was almost matched moments later by Reeza Hendricks, who made 96 off 54 balls for JSK. Despite a lightning-fast 38 from Romario Shepherd, JSK finished fifteen runs short. Roelof van der Merwe was economical and effective with 2-23 in four overs.
In the final on Saturday afternoon Sunrisers Eastern Cape will take on Pretoria Capitals. Rossouw, Parnell, Nortje and (Kiwi) Neesham are four eye-catchers in that team.
Roelof van der Merwe: “We’ve improved so much as the tournament has gone on and now we find ourselves 40 overs away from a trophy. Very excited for the challenge ahead and hopefully we do enough to get that trophy!”
