- Lasting fighting spirit guides Dutch women passed Thailand
The Dutch women’s team has recorded a historic victory over Thailand. The nailbiter was decided on the final ball of the match.
With Jolien van Vliet in for Robyn van Oosterom and Heather Siegers for Frédérique Overdijk the Dutch started their fielding session energetically once again.
Whilst three catches were dropped off Eva Lynch’s bowling a day earlier, the field was now awake. In the fifth over Koncharoenkai was caught by Robine Rijke. In the ninth Jolien van Vliet caught an even bigger fish: the dangerous Chantham.
It took until the fifteenth over before the third wicket fell, again off Eva Lynch’s ( 3-25) bowling. Furthermore Iris Zwilling (1-25) and Silver Siegers (1-18) were successfull and Caroline de Lange economical.
Netherlands innings
Sterre Kalis and Heather Siegers made sure that the Netherlands were well in front after the first Powerplay (46 versus 29). At this stage the target was only 4.8 runs per over.
Unfortunately for the Netherlands several less productive overs followed. Both batters were dropped and that seemed to cause some pressure. A fine 28 by Heather Siegers ended in the hands of the long off fielder: 67/2 in the twelfth over.
Kalis and Zwilling did exactly what the match situation required: look for the boundary and rotate the strike. They were well on schedule when Kalis (a wonderful 56) was run out in the eighteenth over: 104/4. Zwilling (12) followed in the same over.
Eva Lynch and Annemijn Thomson brought the score to 112 with one ball to go. Thomson hit the match winning boundary: victory for the Netherlands!
Coach Shane Deitz
"Great performance today from the team. It's been a tough tour but we kept working hard and stayed positive and got the rewards today.”
“We had clear plans and executed them better today. We have talked about putting the opposition under pressure and take the game to them more and the partnership between Sterre Kalis and Heather Siegers did exactly that.”
“The chase got a little closer than we had hoped but we got there in the end and deserved the win. We need to take this momentum into the last two games and finish on a high."
