The Dutch women's team has won the first match of the European T20 World Cup Qualifier from Italy. In Rotterdam it was 157-114.
After early wicket loss, there was a partnership between Phebe Molkenboer (11) and Babette de Leede until 33/2. De Leede (52) and Robine Rijke (29) added 62 runs for the third wicket.
After the departure of both players, there were still almost six overs to play. Myrthe van den Raad (20) and Iris Zwilling (25 not out) brought the final total to 157.
Phebe Molkenboer soon caught the dangerous Rathnayake on short extra cover and Iris Zwilling got Nannayakkara LBW. An insane catch of Myrthe van den Raad at mid on meant the departure of captain Emilia Bartram. Kontopirakis seemed to misstep and retired hurt.
Due to tight bowling and ground fielding the requested run rate had risen to well above ten runs per over. Italy had to accelerate. An attempt by Piparo to find the boundary was cleverly prevented by Robine Rijke at long on (62/4/12.2).
76 required off the last five overs was the merit of the Dutch. Italy did not reach beyond 114. Iris Zwilling and Isabel van der Woning took two wickets each.
On Thursday, the Dutch will play against Ireland at 11:00 a.m. and on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. against Germany.
