- Thailand too strong in first T20I
The first T20 international in Chiangmai was won by Thailand. Opting to bat first the Netherlands managed 89/8. As a result of fantastic bowling Thailand only surpassed that score in the 19th over.
The Netherlands had a cautious looking innings. Four players made double figure scores, of whom Robine Rijke top scored with a well-made 33.
Again the Thai bowled so accurately that accelerating was difficult. 89/8 was the end result.
Thailand innings
Koncharoenkai was dropped in the first over. Without doubt an early wicket would have given the Dutch team momentum.
Still the team spirit remained excellent. The bowling was exceptional and Thailand had to fight for every run. After the first Powerplay Thailand was only seven runs in front.
However, when Koncharoenkai survived two more chances and Chantham one - remarkably enough all three off Eva Lynch’s bowling - the chances of the Dutch pulling off a win had decreased dramatically.
The Dutch deserved praise that their fighting spirit did not disappear. Thailand only made the winning run in the penultimate over. Hannah Landheer was the most economical Dutch bowler with 0-9 off 3.4 overs.
Coach Shane Deitz:
"Again today we couldn't string together a performance across the whole game. 20-30 runs short with the bat as we couldn't get early momentum in the power play to carry us onto a big enough total. We bowled brilliantly today but dropped easy catches which you can't afford to do at any level. But we are fighting hard and we need to put them under pressure and then take our opportunities when they appear."
